After many years in the making, which included a circuit which failed to meet FIA standards in 1999, China hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2004. The first years of its inclusion saw the uncommon occurrence of a new race winner each year. Hosting the event is the Shanghai International Circuit, one of the finest racing complexes currently included in the regular season and also among the most expensive to construct. The Chinese Grand Prix experienced more turmoil when its former manager was convicted of embezzlement in 2007. This did not affect subsequent race proceedings.
